A PKG is the installation package format used by the PlayStation 4 for games, updates, DLC, and themes. On a standard retail PS4, these files are encrypted and signed by Sony. However, on (firmware 9.00 or lower, sometimes 11.00), users can install unofficial or “fake” PKG files—including backups of original discs or digitally released exclusives.
