Most JRPG boss fights allow for a war of attrition—you can grind, heal, and whittle the boss down slowly. Okumura denies this. He is a DPS check (Damage Per Second). The cognitive dissonance for players is jarring; the game shifts from a story-heavy social sim to a hardcore, esoteric strategy game in the span of five minutes. The stress of the countdown timer combined with the fear of losing a party member creates a palpable tension rarely found in turn-based RPGs.
