This was Rishi Kapoor’s only directorial venture. Having been a massive star in the 1970s and 80s (the Bobby and Karz era), Kapoor wanted to tell the story of Non-Resident Indians (NRIs). He had seen friends and relatives struggle abroad.

The story follows Rohan ( Akshaye Khanna ), a jobless graduate who moves to New York in search of the "American Dream". There, he meets Pooja ( Aishwarya Rai ), a fellow immigrant struggling with her own challenges.
