Okru first came to Hierankl because of a rumor, too. He arrived with a duffel bag that smelled faintly of engine oil and lemon soap, and eyes the color of old coins. Instead they pressed rye bread into his hands and pointed him toward the abandoned mill on the far edge of the fields.
